Wyverstone Tree Planting Project
Wyverstone Parish Council is launching a project to increase the number of trees in the parish.
Our goal is to buy and plant trees representing every person living in the village.
Would you like some of these trees in your garden or on your land?
Can you help plant or look after the trees?
Despite being in a rural area the village has surprisingly few trees and almost no areas of woodland. The aim of the project is to plant a tree for every resident of the village. There are currently about 400 people living in Wyverstone but this will be an ongoing scheme and so as new residents settle in the village, more trees will be planted.
Over time the tree planting should help to improve the local environment, help to maintain biodiversity and do a little to reduce the carbon footprint of the village.
The Parish Council does not own any land and so we are reliant on residents and others who do own land in the parish to identify and offer sites for trees to be planted. The trees would be the property of the landowner, but each would be dedicated to a resident and recorded on a digital map which will be established on the village website.
The project will be rolled out as sites for planting become available and funding is secured.
Sites for a first batch of trees have been identified and some initial funding has been promised by Mid Suffolk District Council and so we hope to start planting early in 2020. We are keen to identify as many additional sites as possible in this first round of planting.
We hope that all the residents of Wyverstone will support this scheme and we really need your help in a number of ways-
- Can you offer sites? If you are lucky enough to own land, whether that is a large field or a small garden, will you allow us to plant trees? This can be a single tree or a hundred trees, whatever you feel you can fit in. The species will be whatever we agree are most suitable for the site. The trees can be dedicated to the owners of the land (as long as they are Wyverstone residents) or to anyone else in the village. If you like, you can plant the trees yourself, just tell us where you have put them.
- Would you like a tree dedicated to you or your family members? If so, please let us know. The only information that will be put on the map is the name that you give us.
- Can you help us plant and maintain the trees?
- Finally, would you like to become involved in organising the scheme and arranging the planting of the trees?
If the answer to any of the above questions is yes, then please contact us via our email, wyverstonetrees@gmail.com or call Simon on 01449 781229 or the Parish Tree Warden, Jo Atkins on 07908 262917
If we all work together, hopefully we can make this scheme a great success.
